I walked just about all over downtown from bar to bar and in various states of "happiness". it is fine down there and even a bit more fun because there are more people living in the area. It is safe as long as you use your head and stay alert. I would be more worried about getting hit by a car then mugged. Oh by the way I feel the same way walking aorund Chicago, and NYC

Diversity is fine as long as everyones basically on the same page. Otherwise you have culture clash.

It's still great to see downtown finally "happening".
